Prayer without belief? – Ask the Rabbi

    Q. I am not sure I believe in God, so why should I pray?

pray daven old ageA. Several answers:
    • Your moments of doubt are precisely when you should pray and ask God to help you towards increased faith.

    • You certainly have some belief left, sufficient to start a prayer.

    • Give God the benefit of the doubt and say, “God, I’m not sure You’re there – but if You are, this is what I’d like to say to You.”

    • Don’t worry too much about whether you believe but just do what you think God would want you to do.
