Blessings in the present tense – Ask the Rabbi

    Q. Why are the blessings in the present tense (“He creates the fruit of the vine”, “He brings forth bread from the earth”, etc.)?

    A. Because God “daily renews the work of Creation” (Siddur).

Unlike the Deists who said that after creating the world, God retired to the background, Judaism and the Theists agree that He is still constantly active in and concerned for His creation.

A result is that the world is not hefker (out of control) and God will not allow it to be destroyed.
