    Honouring parents, honouring God

The Ten Commandments, which have their appearance in this week’s reading, are traditionally divided into five laws between man and God and five between man and man.

This creates a problem when we come to the fifth commandment. It deals with honouring parents and though we and our parents come in the man-to-man category, this command is in the man-God list.

One explanation is that when God conveys His will to human beings, the medium He chooses is our parents.

He says, “A human parent creates the culture of the home: I as the Divine Parent create the culture of the world. As you give honour to your earthly parents, so I expect you to honour Me, the Heavenly Parent”.
