How you judge a leader – Naso

birkat kohanimEvery generation has its own means of assessing its leaders.

At times the capacity that weighed with most people was oratory. At times it was charisma. Sometimes it was courage.

This applies to leaders of all communities and societies, Jewish also. There were changing criteria, but also unchanging ones.

One of the latter category is to be found in the kohanim, who were charged by God with ministering in the sanctuary and uttering blessings upon the people.

The lesson for leadership that the kohanim teach us is that a successful leader is one who brings blessing upon his people.

He blesses them in his own day, and his blessing stays with them and moulds their future.
