Kiddush & “Savri” – Ask the Rabbi

    Q. Why does the person who makes Kiddush sometime start with Savri?

    A. The word means to reason or understand. It is a call to the company to heed the Kiddush, understand its message and endorse the prayer. Some people even say Savri when they are on their own.

Maybe this is directed to the Sabbath angels or it reminds us to think about the words and not say them mechanically.
