Visiting the cemetery – Ask the Rabbi

IMAG1007Q. Why do people visit the cemetery during Ellul?

    A. We should do whatever we can to earn a favourable reply to our prayers. We should get into the penitential mood by saying Selichot.

We should wish others “a good inscription and sealing” (k’tivah vachatimah tovah) in God’s books and hope they will wish us the same thing. We should be very careful with what we say so as not to commit any sins of speech; indeed we should be extremely watchful over every aspect of our conduct.

We should think of our deceased dear ones and hope they will intercede for us with the Divine Judge. Visiting the cemetery is part of this aspect.
