Proclaiming the King – Ask the Rabbi

    Q. Why do the Rosh HaShanah prayers constantly refer to God as King?

    A. It is the anniversary of Creation, the day to acclaim the Creator. We are told in Adon Olam, “He was King before the world was created, but only after everything was made according to His will was His kingship acknowledged”. Without a world there was no-one to recognise His rule.

Yet our job is not just to call Him “King”. Our task is to work on the world and make it malchut shamayim, a heavenly realm.
