    Kollels – Ask the Rabbi

    Q. Our community is starting a Kollel. What is a Kollel and why does it have that name?

    A. It is a community of Torah scholars for advanced study and research, akin to a postgraduate facility at a university.

The name is from a root that means “to include” and it stands for a close-knit community. There could also be a link with the Talmudic institution of Yarchei Kallah, months of kallah, i.e. K’nesset Lom’dei HaTorah – “Assembly of Students of the Torah”.
